Prior to attending business school at Stanford, Colby was Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Counsel for Governor Haley Barbour in Mississippi. In this role, Colby was responsible for managing the team that prepared the Governor’s $5 billion executive budget recommendation, negotiated the final adopted budget with legislative leaders, and then implemented the adopted budget. Colby was also responsible for working with the directors of executive agencies (including the director of the Division of Medicaid, a multi-billion dollar program) on complex policy and management issues. Colby also had senior roles in the State’s efforts to recover after Hurricane Katrina.
Previously, Colby was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Mississippi. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest federal prosecutor in the District. During his tenure, he served as District Anti-Gang Prosecutor and Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor. He prosecuted referrals from law enforcement agencies including the FBI, DEA, and Secret Service. Colby secured convictions at trial of defendants charged with violent crimes, including murder, and white-collar fraud.
Colby began his legal career working as an associate at Wilmer Hale in Washington, D.C. At Wilmer, Colby represented corporate clients in venture capital transactions, structured acquisitions (domestic and international) and public and private securities offerings. His work at Wilmer included being the lead attorney (as a 3rd year associate) for a several hundred million dollar acquisition of the domestic and international assets of a foreign corporation by a U.S. Fortune 500 company.
Colby received his Master of Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business in June 2013. Colby has a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.S. in Economics from Millsaps College.
Colby and his wife, Erin, have three young children.
